Astrid
A child with something to smile about
Healthcare Network’s Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® literally brings smiles to underserved children. For example, during a routine visit to a Collier County elementary school, the team met Astrid, an adorably sweet second grader.
Astrid was not eating well, and her teacher was concerned it might be because of her teeth. Her screening confirmed that Astrid had widespread tooth decay and infection.
The Healthcare Network staff immediately contacted Astrid’s family to devise a care plan. Her family was deeply upset to learn Astrid’s teeth were in such grave condition. They did not have access to insurance through their employers and were concerned they could not afford her care. Healthcare Network assured Astrid’s parents that, as a Healthcare Network patient, Astrid would receive the treatment she needed regardless of their uninsured status.
The staff then helped her family sign up for our Sliding Fee Program and apply for support from one of the assistance funds. Due to Astrid’s advanced dental decay, her extensive treatment plan required 18+ visits that included antibiotics to eliminate infection, x-rays, removal of all her baby teeth, which were decayed, and restoring/filling select permanent teeth. Her family never missed an appointment and, throughout it all, Astrid remained very brave.
Today, Astrid is smiling brighter and out of discomfort thanks to regular check-ups and cleanings.
